Fasetes un to lietošana zināšanu organizācijā

2018

The carbon footprint of a knowledge organization and emission scenarios for a post-COVID-19 world

2021

Publisher Copyright: © 2021 The looming climate crisis requires an immediate response, in which organizations, as major contributors, should play a central role. However, these organizations need appropriate tools to measure and mitigate their climate impacts. One commonly applied method is carbon footprint analysis. Carbon footprint analyses have been conducted for various types of organizations, but knowledge organizations, such as universities and research institutes, have received far less attention, because their carbon footprint is often less visible and can be easily underestimated. This study is based on the carbon footprint analysis of one multinational knowledge organization. This…

Describing urban soils through a faceted system ensures more informed decision-making

2016

Urban areas are increasing worldwide at a dramatic rate and their soils definitely deserve more attention than they have received in the past. In urban environments, soils potentially provide the same ecosystem services as in rural and wild environments, although in some cases they are depleted of their basic functions, such as when they lose their productive and filtering capacities because of sealing, and become mere supports for infrastructures. In other cases, soils of urban areas acquire new functions that are unique to these environments. Current soil classifications fail to effectively account for the complexity of urban soils and the information that is required for their management…

Didactical Reconstructions in Knowledge Organization and Consolidation in Physics Teacher Education

2020

Physics teachers have an essential role in forming the attitudes and conceptions of future citizens towards science and technology, as well as in educating the future generations of scientists. Therefore, the physics teacher education must guarantee the best available education to pre-service physics teachers; sound knowledge of physics should be combined with a good understanding of the didactical and pedagogical aspects of teaching and learning. The situation is often that after university physics courses, the pre-service physics teachers’ knowledge is still quite fragmented and incoherent. They also often lack the concept formation perspective to physics knowledge. I discuss here a resea…

An Ontology Design Methodology for Knowledge-Based Systems with Application to Bioinformatics

2012

Ontologies are formal knowledge representation models. Knowledge organization is a fundamental requirement in order to develop Knowledge-Based systems. In this paper we present Data-Problem-Solver (DPS) approach, a new ontological paradigm that allows the knowledge designer to model and represent a Knowledge Base (KB) for expert systems. Our approach clearly distinguishes among the knowledge about a problem to resolve (answering the what to do question), the solver method to resolve it (answering the how to do question) and the type of input data required (answering the what I need question). The main purpose of the proposed paradigm is to facilitate the generalization of the application do…

Knowledge organization for modelling workflows in Taverna environment

2014

Today Workflow Management Systems (WFMS), like Taverna and Kepler, have a very important place in the everyday work of the scientist. These tools support the access to computational resources and act as interface for building complex data processing chains. The next step is to support decisions of the researcher on autonomously developing workflow parts guided by requirements of the scientist while she/he is working on the high-level goal of the experiment. To this aim, it is necessary an ontology to store the knowledge related to the experiments and tools used, and to make this knowledge available not only to the scientist, but also to a suitable artificial intelligent system. In this pape…

Impact of psychic distance to the internationalization behavior of knowledge-intensive SMEs

2009

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the internationalization behavior of knowledge-intensive small- to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by using macro-level psychic distance indicators and managers' perceptions of psychic distance. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches. In the quantitative approach, the impact of psychic distance to the internationalization behavior is analyzed by using bivariate correlation analysis. The qualitative case study approach is employed to investigate managers' perceptions of psychic distance as regards market entries. Findings: Findings of this study indicate that psychic distance has an impact…

Querying Dynamic and Context-Sensitive Metadata in Semantic Web

2005

RDF (core Semantic Web standard) is not originally appropriate for context representation, because of its initial focus on the ordinary Web resources, such as web pages, files, databases, services, etc., which structure and content are more or less stable. However, on the other hand, emerging industrial applications consider e.g. machines, processes, personnel, services for condition monitoring, remote diagnostics and maintenance, etc. to be specific classes of Web resources and thus a subject for semantic annotation. Such resources are naturally dynamic, not only from the point of view of changing values for some attributes (state of resource), but also from the point of view of changing “…

A General Fuzzy-Parsing Scheme for Speech Recognition

1985

In this paper a Speech Recognition Methodology is proposed which is based on the general assumption of ‘fuzzyness’ of both speech-data and knowledge-sources. Besides this general principle, there are other fundamental assumptions which are also the bases of the proposed methodology: ‘Modularity’ in the knowledge organization, ‘Homogeneity’ in the representation of data and knowledge, ‘Passiveness’ of the ‘understanding flow’ (no backtraking or feedback), and ‘Parallelism’ in the recognition activity.
